Subject: Frequent USB disconnects
Hi, I would like to request some assistance. I frequently get messageboxes that read "KMotionDLL" - "Read Failed - Auto Disconnect" messages. This has happened all along, regardless of which type of motors or cabling I have used in the past. I kicked that can down the road until now. The system recovers and reconnects automatically in a several seconds. It hasn't been a big problem during experimentation and tuning, but now that the machine is just about ready to do actual work, I have to solve it. This is a laptop running on battery connected to the kflop.

I have mentioned previously that my trackpad behaves erratically when SnapAMP is enabled, and you mentioned getting an Olimex USB isolator. I did get that isolator and installed it,but it made the problem much worse, the disconnect happens practically continually.

Some information that may be relevant:

- Without isolator the disconnect only happens if the KFlop Is programmed and the axes are enabled.
- With Isolator, the disconnect only happens if the high voltage power supply is on and the motor cables are connected. The motors themselves do not have to be connected. The axes do not have to be enabled.

I am not sure where to go from here, and would appreciate any ideas you may have. I am not sure which other information I need to share about my system, so please let me know.

The big thing that stands out to me, is the trackpad issues, which would suggest some kind of static/charge build up.

Have you checked that your equipment is properly grounded (to earth), using some form of tester?

One thing to determine is whether KFLOP is resetting/re-booting or the problem is noise in the USB communication.  Although it is most likely the latter please verify this.  One thing you might do is to turn off one of KFLOP's LEDs (Bit46).  If the LED comes back on you know KFLOP re-booted.

If communication noise then you might check that the USB cable has ferrite rings and that the shield shell to shell has a resistance of less than 1 ohm.

How long is the USB cable and does it pass through any panels?

You might try earth grounding your laptop.

Is the motor wiring shielded to earth ground?

Is the motor power wiring shielded to earth GND?

Is the motor power supply isolated from Earth GND?

I had had a problem that looked very similar to this one. It was diagnosed by turning the led off as Tom suggested. Turned out to be a bad solder joint on the voltage regulator. I have to give credit to dynomotion as they diagnosed and fixed it free of charge (I might have been in the warranty period).

I replied a couple of days ago, but it does not look like it actually posted to the group. So I will try again. If this is a double post, sorry about that.

First, I want to thank everyone who replied to my request for help. It is much appreciated. I went through the suggestions, and it turned out that my wall outlet was not grounded (wow!!!). After getting that corrected, the problems went away.

Thanks again!!
